Taxonomy

Krill, ‘whale food’ or ‘young fish’ in Norwegian, are a eucarid crustacean (Table 1). They can be further separated into two differing families; Bentheuphausiidae, entailing exclusively the deep-water species, Bentheuphausia amblyops, and the family Euphausiidae (Figure 2). The two families are seen to differ in that Bentheuphausia amblyops does not have bioluminescent characteristics. Euphausia superba is one of the most well known of the 89 known species of the family Euphausiidae (Siegel, 2014; Marinebio, 2013).
